Rating - 5 Date: 2008-11-22 Content: If you are looking at this system, then you are probably in the same school of thought that I was in when looking for an audio system. Ie. What should I get that has at least 5.1, has good reviews, and is a complete package (w/ HDMI 1.3, etc.) that has a lower than usual price point?
After using it for about a month, I am happy to say it's a really good system for the money!! I have no complaints about the sound quality. It doesn't top out and the bass does not get muffled at higher volume levels. I have a Bose 5.1 system hooked up to a Yamaha receiver at my other house and it does not seem to have the dynamic range out of the speakers that this setup has. To me, the Bose system sounds almost monotone and non-vibrant. In fact I had to get a different center channel with that system because I kept missing speech when listening to movies. This sound system does not give me that feeling. Plus, this system costs several hundred dollars less than the Bose setup. It sounds great right out of the box and it continues to impress me when I watch movies in HD.
I'm definitely a fan of the iPod dock. It works well and it's great that you can control your iPod from the couch with the remote instead of getting up to switch songs or artist, etc.
I give the system 5/5 stars because it definitely passes my own personal sound quality test, it has the most features I have seen for the price range and it worked the first time with no problems. For those with a budget in mind, I highly recommend it! Summary: Great system at a great price!
Rating - 3 Date: 2008-11-10 Content: nice receiver, except for the fact you can't get audio thru the HDMI connections over the system, they are pass-thru to tv only. you have to make seperate connections from your tv's audio out or your input devices to the reciever to hear anything. I'm not an audio expert, but I don't think you really get the full Dolby 7.1 stuff by using the lesser-capable connection methods to the audio receiver. for what it does do, it sounds good. Summary: cheap system, works ok
Rating - 5 Date: 2008-11-07 Content: This is a fantastic system. I am using a Samsung 37" 1080P, XBOX, Blu Ray, and my computer on this system. I love it. Loud, crisp and does not run too hot. I bought the onkyo front speaker stands and wall mounts for the rears. This system rock. I bought the Monster wire and clips to replace the standard speaker wire for this unit and the Onkyo wireless module so I can stream Yahoo radio and iTunes to it - Amazing. I never want to leave my house again. If you are 'considering' this unit, GET IT! Simple set up also, the MANUAL explains everything very well. Summary: Onkyo - Oh My
Rating - 2 Date: 2008-10-27 Content: If you intend to use this with a DVD player using coax or optical connectors, then this system will be great. The is my current set up and I like the quality of sound and the ease of set up.
But my praise ends there. With the understanding that this unit has HDMI (plastered on the box and on the receiver), I was confident that I would be able to plug the Sony S-350 into the HDMI port and be able to enjoy the lossless format from Dolby. Regardless what the Circuit City sales guy had to say, this system is NOT capable of playing lossless formats. This was confirmed when I called Onkyo technical support.
As an alternative, I thought that I could buy a Blu Ray deck that has analog outputs. I would then connect it to the analog inputs on the receiver. Though you would think that the lossless formats would work, Onkyo technical support insists that it will not produce what I am looking for.
In sum, I suggest that those who are looking to migrate to Blu Ray should consider the HTS-6100 and be ready for the future. Summary: Like it today, will hate it in the future
Rating - 5 Date: 2008-10-01 Content: I bought this system with the full knowledge that this receiver does not decode 7.1 HDMI, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD. Where this system really shines is it's outstanding sound quality. Why purchase an AV system that will be obsolete before it's delivered?. The receiver has 7.1 analog inputs for preprocessed signals from your blu-ray player or other 7.1 preprocessed sources. A perfect match to the new inexpensive soon to be released Sony, Panasonic and Samsung Blu-ray players W/7.1 loss-less Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD decoded analog outputs and BD/BD live w/Ethernet connections for on the fly updates to help fight off obsolescence. I would buy this system again today in a heartbeat! Summary: Great price for a great product.
