Other products I have tried (such as gel) don't get hot enough to trigger the feed mechanism; or they leave too much residue and clog the air holes in the burn box; or they are too big & chunky, and end up blocking the feed chute and the fire gets smothered; or they are crumbly and messy (cedar starters and coffee logs). Fatwood is too long for the burn box, expensive, and doesn't stay lit when I turn on the stove fan. I haven't used the Rutland starters much for camping and I don't have a wood stove, but I kept a box in my car last year and several times I was able to give a dozen or so to friends--they loved them too! I usually need 5 squares to start my stove, but (without shipping) it's still the most economical option I've found, and you probably only need one or two for a wood fire. A friend of mine splits his squares with a knife, so they're even more economical, and he can get the fire going in several places at once. You can do that, fray a corner or even twist the square so there is more rough surface, and it will catch more easily esp. under wet or windy conditions. These will save you lots of bother with paper and kindling. Good survival/emergency item.

Content: I have used these before and when I went to the hardware store here in CA to get more they were out. It seems that they only carry them in the Winter time. So I got frantic because these things work great. I found them on Amazon and ordered 3 boxes! One square lights a fire almost everytime in my Lopi wood stove. I have used them to light fires in my fireplace too. They light very quickly and burn long enough to get dry wood blazing. I highly recommend these to anyone who has a wood stove or fireplace and hates getting a stubborn fire started. This product is guaranteed to give you a 99% shot as success in starting your fire the first time everytime.
    Summary: Very good product!

Content: The title says it all. I prefer "fatwood" because it works really well and is only wood.
Summary: Pretty good but petroleum smell when burning.
