Rating - 5 Date: 2008-06-20 Content: I had been waiting to upgrade to this unit and finally did it.
Absolutely incredible improvement on the sound in my car just by replacing the CD Unit.
I drive a Mitsubishi 3000GT, No subwoofer and no special setup in the
car. Stock speaker arrangement, replaced the door speakers about 7 years ago with some very basic replacements that fit. Rear speakers are still stock that came with the car. Tweeters on the front dash got replaced with OEM sets about 7 years ago also.
I replaced the radio in the car about 7 years ago with a Kenwood unit that plays cds due to the 4 inch dash unit that came with the car failing on me. I felt it was time to upgrade the unit and be able to listen to some of SACD discs I have at home in the car.
This is a night and day type of result. All I did was replace the cd unit with this one and the sound is incredible. I can hear all the instruments like I am supposed to and the vocals are exceptionally clear. I used Five for Fighting's "America Town" sacd as the first one to listen. This great cd sounds exceptional in SACD and just fantastic in the car now.
The unit itself was pretty easy to setup and the wiring is all standard.
A few wires I could not use at all due to the age of my car. The parking brake wire which prevents watching DVDs while driving and the dimmer light wire which matches the dimming of lights in your car to the stereo lighting (the 1995 3000GT does not have either of these).
Read the manual as in my cases, no Center Channel and no Subwoofer.
Upon first installing the unit it starts with an initial setup that sets the Center and subwoofer to on or off.
This unit can play DVDs but that's a seperate item you would have to buy.
This unit does not support DVD-Audio (Audio only..no video) cds (I think I own 1 DVD-Audio cd and it was not worth the extra money)
Display is easy to read, display of song titles is problematic due to the size of lettering. This is where the Video screen would be handy. The make a more expensive unit that does all the above and has the screen built in.
*** Added to this review: The displaying of song titles does work. Part of it shows and eventually scrolls across the dispaly screen.
There is a "display" button that allows rotating through several display options. These options: 1) Album Title 2) Song Title 3) the Clock time
and I believe there is a 4th which initially shows album and track being played. Admittedly not something I would use while driving and would leave it to displaying the clock, but if you had co-pilot it would work well.
The controls are easy to use and high marks for the volume control knob which is exceptionally easy to adjust due to a soft ruberized outer band that makes it easy to grip and turn with a very light touch.
In my opinion this is the best buy out there cost and setup wise to improve the sound in your car without ripping everything out. You don't need new speakers, you need a new player.
Buy it and get a few SACD's to play with it, you will not be sorry. Summary: Best available upgrade out there, 5.1 SACD support
Rating - 3 Date: 2008-04-26 Content: I purchased this to replace my 93 BMW Factory radio that I was already using in conjunction with a 5 channel eclipse amplifier and focal speakers. I really enjoyed the sound of my system, but it lacked ipod control and DTS,SACD,MP3,DVD, etc.
I connected this sony unit directly to the RCA amp inputs.
While I loved the sound of the original alpine unit I had, I found this sony unit to be VERY LIFELESS sounding. The preset eq settings sound bad all the way around, I was able create a single custom eq setting that is ok sounding, still not as good as before.
It plays SACD's, but you can't EQ the output with SACD nor can you use the phantom center channel.
Unless you have a video screen it may be very difficult to get movies to play, incase you want to hear the audio.
On the available Ipod adapter, well it works, but trying to track through your albums is really difficult and time consuming. Summary: Jack of all trades master of not many

Rating - 5 Date: 2007-12-11 Content: This is an excellent Sony product - great feel to all controls, excellent support for a wide variety of media and on top of that, Video and 5.1 surround sound. Sound quality is excellent (mine is driving Polk Momo's via an MTX amp). Only two complaints...why is it that in the process of creating new products does Sony forget to include those small details that made earlier products so nice. For example, the display on my older Sony unit could be configured to replace the "Source" indicator with the TIME...that way you can see what time it is without having to push buttons...this one doesn't...my older Sony allowed for programing a "Label" for radio stations (call signs or marketing buzz)...this one doesn't allow for this at all. I know, a bit "picky" but hey, I liked both features a lot. Those "picky" things aside, this is a GREAT unit...can't wait to get an LCD panel to match with the unit...may even get the front and back even though I have a truck :) I'd buy it again in a heartbeat! Summary: Very Versitle Head unit
