Rating - 1 Date: 2008-11-28 Content: We got the thermostat for its programmability and the way it switches between heat and air. All those are great. BUT when the heat does run, the auxillary heat kicks on EVERY TIME. I have spent more time than I care to admit on the phone with tech support, then I found the review that explains that it is what this one does... in an electric heat pump, auxillary heat is VERY EXPENSIVE. So much for the energy star! We have purchased another...Our heat system had NEVER had its auxillary heat on in its four year life. We've replaced it and returned it. I'm watching for my electricity bill and worried... Summary: great for air, HORRIBLE FOR ELECTRIC HEAT!
Rating - 5 Date: 2008-03-22 Content: We are seasonal residents and not always during the same times each year. Prior to installing this thermostat we had to set either heat or AC when we left, depending on the time of year, and hope we would be back before the opposite would be needed. With this unit you enter your year-round settings and forget it. It switches between heat and AC as required.
It is easy to program and install, it took all of 15 minutes for the entire operation. Summary: Perfect solution
Rating - 5 Date: 2008-02-10 Content: This 7 day timer is good value and controls my heat pump heating system with ease. Provided good cost reduction by using the 4 different setting you can program each day. Summary: Good Value and Easy to Use
Rating - 1 Date: 2008-01-05 Content: I purchased this thermostat because I like the programmable setback features as well as the ability to see how long the system has ran in a given day. However, during the heating season my heat bill almost doubled. I had HVAC techs out 4 times, under warranty thankfully, to check the heat pump and they kept saying it was ok. Finally the last guy who came out determined it was the thermostat. The thermostat will run the heat pump for 15mins (this is preprogrammed and NOT changeable). If it hasn't reached its set point within that time it brings in Aux heat until it reaches its set point. When it's cold you're almost always running on Aux heat. For me that was electric and you can imagine the bills. I have since went with a thermostat that has Adaptive Intelligence (Honeywell) that will only bring in Aux heat when needed based on an internal calculation. The Adapative Intelligence thermostats will also shut off the Aux heat when it gets close enough to the set point that the thermostat knows the heat pump can do the rest. This Hunter thermostat works great for A/C, just not for heat with electric backup (Aux). Summary: Horrible for Multi-Stage heat pumps with electric coil backup
Rating - 5 Date: 2007-06-23 Content: We had previously installed a regular programmable thermostat for a standard system. Unfortunately we found out two years (too late) later that if you use a regular programmable thermostat with a heat pump system then you never actually use the heat pump in the winter - you always run off of emergency heat which uses a ton of electricity and runs up the electric bill big time! We've since installed this unit and it works excellent. There are so many programmable features I don't even know where to start! This is an exceptional unit for the price - you won't be dissatisfied! Summary: A must for a heat pump system
