Customer Reviews Average rating - 5.0
Rating - 5 Date: 2008-03-19 Content: I had concerns as to whether a long level would be damaged in shipment. Amazon packed the level in a VERY thick cardboard tube. The level and the tube were in good condition when they arrived.
This is a high quality, professional construction level at a reasonable price. If you are not familiar with box beam levels, they are more stable, durable and accurate than the 'I' beam (solid or slotted) design.
I prefer to purchase American made tools. Both Empire and Johnson used to manufacturer all of their levels in America (I have have both 24" and 48" Johnson box beam levels made in America.). All Stabilia levels are made in Germany. Most Johnson and Empire levels are now made in China. This particular level is made in Austria. The quality of build and accuracy seems identical to the American made product. Note: I did find it curious that the 72" box beam Johnson level sold in the largest nation-wide home improvement store was made in China. Summary: On the level

Rating - 5 Date: 2005-12-23 Content: A good way to tell if this type of tool is accurate is to place it on as level a surface as you can find, very carefully note the reading - then, flip the level end over end and take another careful reading. (Make sure that the level is in the same place for each reading.) There should be NO perceptible difference between the readings. Then, do the same thing on a vertical surface, such as a wall or post in a store. If the tools are brand new and have a sales label over one end, shim the same spot on the other end with a piece of that label, so the label's thickness won't affect the test.
I purchased my 6' Johnson level from Home Depot. It was the only one of six identical Johnson tools they had in stock that passed the above accuracy test. The other 5 were off by up to 1/8" over the length of the level. That is not in accordance with Johnson's stated spec of "accuracy to 0.5 mm per meter". To clarify, the worst tool read perfectly level on the first part of the test, but when flipped end-over-end, needed a 1/8" shim on one end for THAT side to [also] read "level". A couple of those six levels were perfect for either the horizontal or vertical readings, but not both.
I have no idea if only 1 in 6 being perfect is typical, and since I bought mine over a year ago, this might have been a fluke. However, based on MY experience, you might consider buying your level at a local store, after testing it for accuracy. Or, if you buy it online, test the level after you receive it, and return it if it's off.
My level is a terrific tool. Absolutely 5-star. It's perfectly machined, the vials are very well done, the yellow paint and printing is flawless, and the aluminum is a good compromise between weight and strength. I'd get the same level again, but, I'd still purchase it locally. Summary: My Johnson Level is perfect
