Amazon.com Review:
With a sleek, compact profile, the Koss KS3411 is a worthy addition to a small office, bedroom, or anywhere else you need decent sound wrapped in an attractive package. A system this size and at this price makes compromises in terms of sound quality and features, but even so, we were impressed by the KS3411's overall value. The KS3411 couldn't be easier to setup. Plug it into the wall, attach the speaker cables to the color-coded ports, and that's it. There's also a supplied AM antenna for listening to your favorite talk station. It would be nice if Koss would include a manual with the KS3411; we were left to figure out the unit's functions on our own. Thankfully, the unit is fairly easy to use without any guidance.
The KS3411 wins big points for spiffiness. The muted silver casing is understated and classy, while brilliant blue backlighting in the display and around the volume knob is subtle yet striking. With a depth of 8 inches, the unit will easily fit into a bookshelf or atop a dresser.
Controls are laid out for simple, intuitive use. A row of buttons on the top edge of the unit control tuning and CD functions, while controls on the front face allow easy switching between CD and radio modes, as well as radio preset navigation. Koss mostly hits the mark when it comes to user-friendliness with this system, but try as we might, we could not figure out how to set any radio presets--our only design grumble.
With 10 watts of total power, the KS3411 isn't going to wake the neighbors, but it delivers sound that, though a bit tinny to our ears, was still respectable. The CD player quickly queued up tracks and pleased us with its ability to play burned CD-R and CD-RW discs. The radio's digital tuner was very handy, as it allowed for precise tuning and quick seek functions--no hunting for just-right frequency.
While we hoped to tweak the sound quality of various CDs, the automatic equalization and bass boost functions are somewhat lacking. We didn't hear a discernible difference between, say, the classical setting and the jazz setting. We did like using the supplied remote, however, as it offered a few features not available on the main unit, such as a CD intro scan feature and a mute button. We also liked the fact the timer and alarm functions are programmable from the remote. The KS3411 is a good alarm clock for folks who like to wake up to CDs. --Josh Gunn
