Rating - 5 Date: 2007-07-19 Content: My first impression when this wok arrived was "This is HUGE"! It's also quite deep and round bottomed, so I had purchased a ring to use with it on the stove. It turns out that because the wok is so deep, it is very stable directly on the burner grates of my gas stove so the ring is unnecessary. It's made of mirror-polished stainless steel and comes with and instructional DVD.
Being new to cooking in general, I watched the DVD, which was extremely helpful when it came to the actual cooking and my first attempt at stir-fry was fantastic! The wok heated up quickly and in a few minutes, I had a delicious beef with broccoli dinner. I was able to make the enough for the 7 people here without over crowding the wok. In fact, it's deep enough to use for deep frying, which is demonstrated on the DVD. The handles are very well designed and don't get hot so it's easy to control the wok on top of the stove. It also cleaned up effortlessly. Finally, it's so pretty that I store it sitting on the unneeded wok ring on an open shelf!
I think if you cook for a family and are looking for a large wok that is easy to care for, you'll be very pleased with this one. It might be a little too big for a single person or a couple (unless you entertain a lot) or if storage space in your kitchen is limited.
One note, this company also makes carbon steel woks and the printed instructions said to season BOTH the carbon steel and the stainless steel woks before use. Don't try to season this stainless steel one. It doesn't work and is not necessary. Trying to season it with oil as directed just makes an ugly brown mess in the bottom that you have to scrub off! It cleans up easily after use as is and if you want to keep it looking shiny new, just use a little Bar Keepers Friend and it will look like you just took it out of the package! Summary: My first wok is a winner!
