    Editorial Reviews
    Amazon.com Review:
With a minimum freezing temperature of –4 degrees F, the Simac Gelato Junior takes only about 30 minutes to satisfy your craving for a frozen confection. Plus, the built-in compressor freezer operates continuously, so you can turn out multiple flavors of ice cream while your guests finish their dinner. A 60-minute electronic timer frees you up for other activities, and an automatic safety mechanism sounds a warning beep if the integrated spatula blade gets stuck. A removable 1-quart bowl, transparent lid, and slim ingredient window all simplify operation, and the unit is also useful for crafting frozen drinks and chilled soups. Though not lightweight at 31 pounds, the Gelato Junior is fairly sleek for its class, measuring 11 by 14 by 12-1/4 inches. Simac includes a booklet of tasty ice cream, sorbet, and dessert sauce recipes, as well as an ice cream scoop. --Emily Bedard

Content: I've had my unit for years and love it. It still works perfectly and produces great ice cream at half the calories of the premium stuff because I use mostly 2% milk. Mine is an older model that still says Simac on the side, but looks the same. I use Junket mix as my base (the vanilla is available in most grocery stores), add 1 3/4 cup of milk and 1/4 cup of heavy cream and mix it directly in the removable pail with a stick blender, which takes less than 2 minutes. That's it for the basic vanilla prep. Decrease the milk a little and add chopped, pitted cherries for a wonderful fresh cherry ice cream, then add chocolate bits after the ice cream has thickened and you have--well, you know what--and it's just as good as B&J's, but almost dietetic comparatively.

At first, I tried all sorts of wonderful complicated recipes, but the Junket route is so easy and consistent in results, now that's what I use most of the time. A couple of things to be aware of. . . the ice cream maker works more consistently if you don't move it. There's something about inner freezing fluid needing to be settled for proper results. Moving the machine can disturb that. Also, if you need to add ingredients that won't fit through the chute, stop the machine and take the pail out while you add things and replace it afterward. That keeps the mixture from freezing to the side of the container, which can stop the blade from being able to churn.

Believe me, I have this down to a science and bless the day this ice cream maker came into my life. When tempted by zillion calorie ice cream concoctions on the grocery shelf, I just remind myself that I can make my own at home, and pass them by. Highly recommended for ice cream aficionados.

Summary: Move over Ben and Jerry, my ice cream is just as good

Content: The Lello 4070 Gelato Junior is the best "luxury" appliance we own. The ease of use and speed that high quality frozen treats can be made right on our counter top really makes this a great value. The machine has held up with fairly heavy usage for almost three years.

Since I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in the past year, we have been using it even more frequently to make me sugar free treats using SPLENDA No Calorie Sweetener Granular, 9.7-Ounce Resealable Bags (Pack of 2) or Erythritol Powder by NOW Foods - (1 lbs. Powder) to sweeten the ice cream.

We also use it to make reduced calorie snacks for our kids and they enjoy making their own creations (Coffee Almond Ice Cream seems to be their current favorite).

Usage and clean up are fairly easy as well, making this a great kitchen addition the whole family can enjoy!

    Highly recommended!

Content: My first batch was easy and yummy! Yippee! The next time, the machine would not churn. I finally read the rest of these Amazon reviews and found out that I have to move the handle of the cooling cylinder so that it faces me completely. In the process of trying to pour out the ice cream, fix the machine, etc, I ripped out the plastic ring. Yuck. No online manual, hardcopy documentation, or website whatsoever to help. And the recipe book is filled with typos. Doesn't inspire confidence. So I say, read all of these Amazon reviews. They have the operating instructions that aren't listed anywhere else. Then knowing that you have to pay $399, you decide.
    Summary: "High maintenance"

Content: I am pleased with the Lello 4070 however I wish it scraped the ice cream off the sides a little closer.

Content: I bought the Lello Jr. at the beginning of this summer after returning from our 10th trip to Italy, and deciding that I wanted to try and make gelato. After doing lots of research I settled on the Lello Jr, and I haven't regretted it. I've mastered basic vanilla, Sicilian bittersweet chocolate, crema, fresh peach, and the most fabulous cantaloupe gelato -- so delicious that my boyfriend says it's as good as if not better than what we ate in Italy. I also made David Lebovitz's Candied Bacon Ice Cream last weekend -- AMAZING! All of them are so easy with my Lello. Once I finally figured out the proper recipes for each (some I made up, but I also swear by and highly recommend "The Perfect Scoop" by David Lebovitz to learn the basics as his recipes are beyond compare) the Lello made every easy and the results were beyond my expectations. As I became comfortable with making gelato, I used what I learned from "The Perfect Scoop" and those recipes to help create my own. The Lello is heavy, yes, so I keep it on my kitchen counter, and it's hard to pour add-ins at the end (I don't use the tiny opening; I just stop the machine, pull out the dasher/paddle, add the mix-ins, put the paddle and top back on and start it back up). It also takes longer to make a quart than 30 minutes -- usually closer to an hour for mine. Difficult to clean? No, not even when I overfill the canister and some of the gelato pushes up into the top of the paddle and lid. It all wipes clean very quickly with a damp cloth. Sometimes I wish I'd purchased the larger, Pro model that makes two quarts at a time, but since there are only two of us at home, and the gelato tastes best when it's fresh (either that day or the next), it's probably best I only have the Jr. I did buy an extra canister so I can make two flavors quickly (one canister can still be chilling in the fridge while the other is churning). LOVE the Lello Jr-- HIGHLY recomend it!!
Summary: LOVE my Lello!! I feel like a Gelato Maestra!
