Customer Reviews Average rating - 3.0

    Rating - 3 Date: 2003-08-30
Content: The Guardian is based on a novel called The Nanny ,written by the unwarrantedly neglected Dan Greenbeurg .
It is set in L.A and the movie opens on scenes of domestic contentment in the home of Phil and Kate ;played respectively by Dwier Brown and Carey Lowell. They are a prosperous couple and the pace of their work life compels them to employ a nanny -an Englishwoman named Camilla (Jenny Seagrove). This is not the most judicious piece of hiring they have ever done for it turns out she is a devotee of a Druidical cult which specialises in human sacrifice. .The God they worship is --wait for it
!--a cannibalistic tree ,a species of which just happens to be growing in a nearby canyon.
What we then get is essentially a split personality movie--a suspense thriller about the missing child .who is abducted by Seagrove as a preliminary to proffering it for the delection of the local tree population ,combined with a horror movie. For me ,the suspense movie ,while mechanical ,works and the horror movie does not, because it is simply unbeleievable

What does almost transform the dross into gold is the trademark direction of William Friedkin .His directorial signature is all over the movie and the techniques he employed so well in The Exorcist are all present and correct here--prying camera ,lots of camera movement ,oodles of point of view shots .Its a virtuoso pice of direction and almost persuades you to ignore the inherent impluasibility of the story with its overtones of the Grimm Fairy tales (the woods as source of terror)and hints of magic realism .
The same themes as in The Exorcict are deployed here-science v religion ;scepticism of medical and law enforcement professionals in the face of supernatural and cult activity. Also ,like The Exorcist ,it opens on a note of realism.
It has its moments --a wolf attack and as flying sequence especially-but it lacks the universality of theme and the accomplshed cast of the earlier ,classic movie.

Seagrove is excellent ,her co stars are woeful and Friedkin is the real star.
    Summary: Patchy horror flick

    Rating - 3 Date: 1999-11-20
Content: I saw this movie a while ago and I don't remember much about it, really. It was just your typical psycho nanny movie witha few dumb supernatural twists to it. The movie didn't make much sense, was often boring, and not scary. Dissapointment from the director of THE EXORCIST..........
Summary: OK HORROR MOVIE IF YOU HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO!
